S.E.E.D began by the sponsoring of Japheti from Nyamihuu Primary school by two of the trustees in April 2003. His was a common story, with the villagers of Nyamihuu having raised enough for his uniform and necessities, but unable to fund the school (boarding) fees. Japheti has now completed studies at Kalenga Secondary School and can look forward to a brighter future for himself and his family. The standard 7 (final primary year) students take their final exams in September and soon apply to three Secondary schools. In late December they hear their results and which, if any, secondary schools they have been accepted by. It is also at this time that the Primary schools and family apply to S.E.E.D. for funding. We make decisions based on the district Education Offices (DEO) recommendation and the financial background of each student. Each student is then teamed with his/her sponsor and the funding is placed straight into the secondary schools' accounts.
In Tanzania most children leave school at 14, many of whom have the ability to continue in further education, but are denied the opportunity due to lack of funding. This is especially noticeable in areas such as Iringa Rural Region, where S.E.E.D. is based. Many of the problems of Rural Tanzania are exacerbated by the lack of educational opportunities available to young people. Child labour (in particularly house girls and boys), HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancy and poverty are some examples of the most common problems in Iringa Rural Region. |
